Application

The screening of successful applicants will be based only through documents submitted. Candidates must submit the necessary Application Forms, Personal Statement and Study Plan, Letters of Recommendation, and documents verifying language proficiency (listed below).

Special Measures regarding COVID-19

Due to the spread of COVID-19, test-taking opportunities have been limited in many parts of the world. In consideration of the situation, the following temporary measures will be taken for Fall and Winter Screening 2022 and Spring Screening 2023:

  1. The scores of TOEFL iBT® Home Edition test will be regarded equivalent to those of the normal test.
  2. The two-year validation period of scores/certificates for language proficiency test(s) will be extended to three years.
  3. An online interview test (※) with a faculty member can replace the submission of a test score/certificate. Language is limited to English or Japanese.
  • To apply for an interview test, please complete Online FormThe interview test must be completed prior to the submission of the application documents.

Eligibility

Contents in red are temporary measures that are in place in consideration of the current COVID-19 situation. See above for details.

Programs Preferred Language Proficiency Level upon Application
English Language Teaching Practices (ELT) TOEFL iBT® TEST 88, TOEFL® PBT TEST 570, or an equivalent level of English demonstrated by another English test such as TOEIC® L&R 820, IELTS™ 6.5, Cambridge English Qualifications C2 Proficiency, and STEP 1st level.
Japanese Language Teaching Practices (JLT)

Native Speaker of Japanese (Must meet 1) or 2) of the requirements below)

  1. TOEFL iBT® TEST 71, TOEFL® PBT TEST 530, or an equivalent level of English demonstrated by another English test, such as TOEIC® L&R 750, IELTS™ 6.0, and STEP Pre-1st level.
  2. Must meet both of the following requirements:
    • TOEFL iBT® TEST 61, TOEFL® PBT TEST 500, or an equivalent level of English demonstrated by another English test, such as TOEIC® L&R 700, IELTS™ 6.0, and STEP Pre-1st level.
    • Those who demonstrated proficiency by language test other than English. TOPIK (Test of Proficiency in Korean) 5th level, HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) 5th level, or CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference of Languages) C1 level.

Non-Native Speaker of Japanese (Must meet both of the requirements below)

  1. TOEFL iBT® TEST 61, TOEFL® PBT TEST 500, or an equivalent level of English demonstrated by another English test, such as TOEIC® L&R 700, IELTS™ 6.0, and STEP Pre-1st level.
  2. JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test) N1 level.
Global Communication Practices (GCP) TOEFL iBT® TEST 79, TOEFL® PBT TEST 550 or an equivalent level of English demonstrated by another English test, such as TOEIC® L&R 800, IELTS™ 6.5, Cambridge English Qualifications C1 Advanced, and STEP 1st level.

The scores above are general standards, and you can still apply even if you have not met these standards. The scores of TOEFL iBT® Home Edition test will be regarded equivalent to those of the normal test. A score from TOEFL ITP® TEST or TOEIC® L&R IP TEST implemented exclusively for AIU is considered equivalent to that of TOEFL® PBT TEST or TOEIC® L&R TEST, respectively. Applicants are required to submit a score report from one of the required language proficiency tests. The scores/certificates for language proficiency test(s) must be dated within 3 years from the last day of each application period.

Research Student System for Non-native Speakers of English

* This section is provided only in the Japanese language as the Research System for non-native speakers of English is eligible only to those with Japanese nationality, permanent residency visa, special permanent residency visa, student visa, or other types of visa excluding temporary visit.

本学の英語集中プログラム(EAP)で英語の運用能力を高めてから本研究科に入学する選択肢もあります。英語運用能力が出願要件に達していない場合でも、英語を集中的に学習することにより本研究科での修学が可能になると判断された場合は、研究生として入学することが可能です。ただし、研究生としての入学は、大学院の合格を保証するものではありません。本制度の利用は、日本国籍、日本国の(特別)永住許可、「留学」等の在留資格(短期滞在を除く)のいずれかの保持者に限ります。詳しくは「研究科の概要と特色」ページをご覧ください。

To recruit a wide range of talents, the AIU Professional Graduate School adopts April and September admissions (JLT limits its admission to September).

The screening of successful applicants will be based only through documents submitted, and there is no application fee. If you are interested in applying, please download the application form below.

Be sure to save the downloaded data to your PC. The application documents must be submitted in print. Your signature and date must be written by hand.
